Raymond Eugene Shoopman
January 23, 1923 ~ November 17, 2015 (age 92) 92 Years OldRaymond Eugene Shoopman, 92, of Burlington, died at 1:15 AM Tuesday, November 17, 2015, at the Burlington Care Center in Burlington.
Born January 23, 1923, in Mount Sterling, IL, he was the son of Everett Lloyd and Hazel Lucille Watkins Shoopman. On November 1, 1947, he married Mary Jean Shanahan in Quincy, IL.
Ray was the store manager of Sears Roebuck & Co. in Burlington from 1967 until 1986. Prior to moving to Burlington, he was an assistant manager of Sears Roebuck & Co. in Alton, IL., and Coffeyville, Kansas, and was a store manager in Macomb, IL. He had 38 years of service with Sears Roebuck & Co. before retiring in 1986.
He was a 1941 graduate of Quincy High School. He attended Northeast Missouri State College on a football scholarship, and graduated in 1948 from Western Illinois University with a Master's degree.
He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving during World War II as an airplane mechanic.
He was of the Catholic faith. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; four sons; Daniel Shoopman and John Shoopman, both of Burlington, David (Karen) Shoopman and Michael (Sherry) Shoopman, both of Dayton, OH; two daughters; Karen (Bill) Cahill and Mary Kay (Jim) Dreckmeier, both of Burlington; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and two brothers.
As per Raymond's request, cremation has been accorded.
The Memorial Service for Mr. Shoopman will be on Thursday, November 19, 2015, at 10:00 AM at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Dean Graber as the officiant. Military rites will be conducted by Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Interment will be at a later date.
