Derek Showalter Obituary

Derek Lee Showalter, 51, of Burlington, died Monday, December 1, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Derek was born on April 25, 1974, in Salina, Kansas, the son of Nelson and Linda (Detweiler) Showalter.  Derek lived in Kansas through grade school.  He moved to Iowa to live with his father his high school years where he graduated from Danville High School in 1992.

Derek was a very hard worker.  He liked to keep his body moving, both through exercise (he enjoyed lifting weights his entire life) or through his work.  Derek worked as a truck driver for the majority of his adult life and also owned his own lawn service.  While he did enjoy working hard, he also looked forward to socializing with his friends and family.

Speed was a passion for Derek.  He owned motorcycles and four wheelers - enjoying the adrenaline rush that both gave him.  He was a good marksman and looked forward to trap shooting, target shooting, and just collecting guns and ammo.

Derek loved being a father.  His children and grandchildren were his world and he enjoyed the time that he was able to spend with them.

Survivors include Samantha (Colton) Stacy and Lee (Hailee) Showalter (mother, Angel Harman); Mazee Showalter (mother, Jessica Showalter); step-mother, Mary Ann Showalter; siblings, Kelli (Kevin) Knecht and Kasey (Wendy) Rider; grandchildren, Creed Stacy and Berklee Showalter; nephew, Wyatt Jackson; and nieces Katie Knecht, Baylee Jackson, and Macy Jackson.

Sadly, Derek was preceded in death by his parents, Nelson and Linda.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.  A celebration of Life will be held 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM December 13, 2025 at the Burlington Eagles Club.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Derek's memory. Contributions may be sent to Derek's family in care of Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street, Burlington, IA  52601.

Please continue to keep Derek and his family in your thoughts during this difficult time.
