Duane Sourwine Obituary

Duane Arthur Sourwine, 78, of Burlington, died Thursday, May 23, 2024 in Burlington.

Born October 12, 1945, in Burlington, he was the son of Melvin Lee and Dorothy Mary Wolf Sourwine. On April 1, 1967 he married Teresa Trautner at St. Paul's Catholic Church and together they had two daughters, Sandra Anne and Tamara Mary.

On May 6, 1984, he married Janice Louise Humphries in Lomax IL, at the Lomax Christian Church. She preceded him in death on June 15, 2019.

He proudly served his country in the National Guard. Duane was the co-owner of Leyda, Burrus and Metz Monuments from 1976 to 2014 alongside his brother Ron.

He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish-St. Paul's Catholic Church. Duane was always an incredibly hard worker but when he wasn't working he enjoyed his cats, boating, snowmobiles, working on cars and attending car shows and thoroughly enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Shipley of Burlington, Tamara (Brent) Levinson of Burlington; step-daughter, Heidi Brown of Fort Madison; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Ronald (Reta) Sourwine of Florida; sister, Victoria (Ron) Sourwine of Burlington; several nieces and nephews and his beloved cat, Baxter.

Besides his wife of 34 years, he was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Nathan Michael Lerud.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 6:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 4:00 PM Rosary Service until 6:00 PM Thursday, May 30, 2024, at  Prugh's Chapel downtown, 317 N. 4th St. Burlington.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Sourwine will be 10:00 AM Friday, May 31, 2024, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. Paul's Catholic Church with Fr. Dominic Nguyen as the Celebrant. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Drake following the burial from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Divine Mercy Parish and for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice.
