Elmer C Springsteen

Elmer C. Springsteen, 90, of Burlington, died at 10:05 pm Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born June 7, 1931, in Burlington, he was the son of Elmer L. and Doris R. Reeb Springsteen. On July 15, 1950, he married Dorothy Marie Riemann in Des Moines County.  She died March 2, 2014.

He graduated from Huron High School in 1950.  He later graduated from the Tool and Die program. 

Elmer worked as a Tool and Die maker at both Sylvania and Iowa Industries. After working 26 years at Iowa Industries, he retired and went to work as a part time security guard at Westland Mall. He especially enjoyed his part-time job as it gave him an opportunity to see many of his old friends and to make many new friends of all different ages. Elmer never met a stranger. 

He was of the Methodist faith. He took pride in being a good husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa.  When the grandchildren would visit he always had time to play board games, look at books and tell his stories. Some of Elmer's hobbies were his yard work and building model ships.  One of his favorite ships he built was "The Victory" which after he built it, it was over 3 feet high and 4 feet in length.  Elmer always enjoyed spending time with his family which included a variety of dogs throughout the years and several pet birds.  

Survivors include one son, Thomas (Karen) Springsteen of Gilbert, AZ; two daughters, Kathy (John) Thompson of Cedar Falls, IA, and Diane (Blake) Ruther of West Burlington; five grandchildren, John Ryan (Kathy) Thompson of Cedar Falls, IA, Joshua (Elisa) Thompson of Denver, CO, Sara Springsteen of Lincoln, NE, Jeremy (Christa) Ruther of Burlington, and Justin (Carrie) Ruther of West Burlington; and six great-grandchildren, Allyia, Gabrielle, Riley, Alyssa and Caden Ruther, and John Davis Thompson.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.  

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, October 14, 2021 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mr. Springsteen will be 11:00 AM Friday, October 15, 2021, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Amanda Sorenson officiating. Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society and Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.
