James E. Lewis Sr.

James Earl Lewis Sr., 68, of Burlington, died at 1:58 PM Sunday, August 29, 2021, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born July 4, 1953, in Luxora, AR, he was the son of Morris and Irene L. Garrett Lewis. On November 21, 1998, he married Sharon Renee Hatfield in Burlington. 

James started working at 4 years old picking cotton. Over the years he had many jobs, and retired after many years as a machinist and forklift driver for Case.

He had a very strong faith in the Lord. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and working on anything with a motor. He love spending time with his pets. James was a kind man and was always there if you need anything. 

Survivors include his wife, Sharon; four daughters, Chasity Lewis of Burlington, Crystal Lewis and Cassandra Lewis both of St. Louis, MO, and Candance Lewis of Burlington; one son, James E. (Lisa) Lewis, Jr. of Iowa City; one step-son, Casey (Brittany) Ackerson of Burlington; 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 12 siblings, Joe (Joyce) Lewis of Chicago, IL,  Magnolia Davis of Burlington, Maggie Lou Lewis of Burlington, Thomas (ErmaLinda) Lewis of Sterling,  Parlee Taylor of Burlington, Willie Lewis of Ottumwa, L.C. (Sherry) Lewis of Burlington, Jerome (Mary Kay) Lewis of Colorado Springs, CO, Joanne Lewis of Burlington, Louise (Ronnie) Stinson of Cedar Rapids, Earl Lewis of Ft Madison, Rosie Cratton of Burlington, Lutrice Williams, Raymond (Lauretta) Lewis of Burlington; several nieces and nephews and his mother-in-law, Cheryl Gibson of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one step-daughter, Hannah Ackerson, one grandchild, Carey Jr., five brothers, Fred, O.W., John, L.V., and Morris Lewis Jr.; one sister, Eva Mae Spencer and father-in-law & fishing buddy, Don (Hoot) Gibson.

The family has requested mask for the services, due to health concerns of family members. 

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 4, 2021 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mr. Lewis will be 11:00 AM Saturday, September 4, 2021, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Bill  Hornback officiating.  Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.
