James "Jim" Warren Hartman, 70, of Burlington, died at 1:05 PM, Monday, April 17, 2017, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington after a very courageous battle with throat cancer.

Born May 10, 1946, in Denver, CO, he was the son of Henry Warren and Adeline Elizabeth Sleeth Hartman.

He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver, CO in 1964 and served in the U.S. Army, stationed in California & Hawaii, from 1965 until 1967. Following his service, Jim completed his higher education and received a Bachelors in Marketing from the University of Northern Colorado in 1970.

On May 31, 1969, he married LuJuan K. Fried in Kingston, IA. They returned to Colorado where they lived until the early ‘80’s, when they relocated back to Iowa with their two children, Tiffini and Ryan.

Jim was a very social person, and excelled as a sales executive throughout his life.  His career started in Denver, CO at Vendor Supply Company. After moving back to Iowa, Jim worked at Metromail in Mt. Pleasant, where he received many sales awards. His 35 year career in selling direct mail ended with his retirement from American Spirit Mailing in 2014.

He was a former Boy Scout Master, a member of the American Legion Post #52, and Fraternal Order of the Eagles Burlington Aerie #150. Jim was also a diehard Denver Broncos and Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Anyone who knew Jim, knew his love for fine food and wine.  In recent years, Jim’s passion turned to gardening where he would spend his days perfecting their beautiful flower and butterfly gardens. When he wasn’t tending to his yard, Jim could often be found golfing with friends and family.  Fishing was another hobby of Jim’s, whether it was fresh water or deep sea fishing, there wasn’t a fish Jim couldn’t catch!

Survivors include his wife, LuJuan; one daughter, Tiffini (Bruce) Brockway of Burlington; one son, Ryan James (Tracey) Hartman of Denver, CO; three grandchildren, Grady Hartman, Adeline Brockway, and Charlotte Hartman; one brother, Henry (Linda) Hartman of Littleton, CO; several sisters and brothers in-law, Vicky & Bill Miller of Mediapolis, Jan & Dave Full of Iowa City, Teena & David Pflum of Minneapolis, MN and William Fried of Olds; and five nieces and eight nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Nancy Richardson, and one grandson, Garrett Brockway.

Visitation will be from noon until 8:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Thursday, April 20, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mr. Hartman will be 11:00 AM, Friday, April 21, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz officiating.  Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at Big Muddy's following the service. Jim was a strong advocate for medical research and, following the service, his body will be donated to the University of Iowa for the advancement of science. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the Garrett M. Brockway Foundation "Garrett's Path" and Great River Hospice House.

Jim's family would like to offer a special thank you to the staff and volunteers at the Great River Hospice House for their exceptional care and dedication during his final days.
