John Kirby, 71, of Burlington, died at 4:30 PM Friday, October 9, 2020, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born March 31, 1949, in Burlington, he was the son of Rex and Dorothy Schrader Kirby. On April 1, 1972 he married Juanita Prado.
He graduated from Burlington High School and later attended Burlington Junior College. He worked for the Burlington School District until his retirement.
He was a member of Cascade Boating Association, Ed's Cascade Fishing and Hunting Club, Carthage Lake Club, Elks Club, and was active with the Mexican Fiesta Committee. He loved being on the river and spending time at the family cabin. He loved to ride his four wheeler all over Big Island. He knew his way through the island better than anyone. He was a true River Rat. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He could be found most afternoons at Cascade Boat club enjoying a Budweiser while watching the river roll by. He loved going to Burlington Bees games. He was a big Cincinnati Reds and Minnesota Vikings fan. He attended many Reds and Vikings games with family throughout the years. He truly enjoyed spending time with his four grandsons. He loved bowling and was part of many bowling leagues throughout the years.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita of Burlington; son, John (Brooke) Kirby; daughter, Jessica (Mike) Runge; three sisters, Nancy (Steve) Ramsey, Nora (Randy) Spiker, and Norma (Jim) Engel; cousin, Tim Agnew; four grandsons, Elijah, Keith, Finn, and Anson; two aunts; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.
There will be a celebration of life at a later date.
A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.
