John Poggemiller Obituary

John Henry Poggemiller, 89, of Burlington, died Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born January 20, 1936, in Burlington, he was the son of Albert E. and Doris M. Theesfeld Poggemiller. On May 28, 1970, he married Shirley L. Willem Carter in Burlington. She died on July 2, 2002.

He was a 1954 graduate of Burlington High School and a 1960 graduate of Burlington Junior College, currently known as SCC. He later enrolled in classes at the University of Iowa. 

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving from 1954 until 1958 on the USS Vogelsang (DD-862).

John worked 35 years for Chittenden and Eastman Furniture, where he retired in as the shipping superintendent. 

John was of Baptist Faith. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, mushroom hunting and living at his cabin on the river for 32 years. John also had a passion for woodworking, and made many bird house over the years. 

Survivors include his brother, Robert (Sharon) Poggemiller of Burlington; sister, Arlene Estle of Houston, TX; extended family members; friend, Kelly Wilson and companion and friend, Kelly Rodgers.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Senn.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

There will be no public services. His ashes will be laid to rest next to his wife in Aspen Grove Cemetery
