Obituary

John Randolph, 92, of Burlington, died Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born May 16, 1931, in Bucharest, Romania he was the son of  American Counsul John and Persis Schramm Randolph. He married Margaret Elder in 1953 and they later divorced. On July 4, 1984, he married Susan Christine Hertel in Carmel, California. 

John graduated high school in St. Petersburg, FL and the University of Florida where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and Beta Gamma Sigma honorary business fraternity. He served as a 1st Lieutenant in the army during the Korean War. Upon returning to Burlington, he ran the J.S. Schramm Co. until it closed in 1992, after 156 years of operation. He was the fourth generation of the family to head the business.

At various times John belonged to the Burlington Kiwanis Club, The Burlington Golf Club, the Main Street Board and the United Way Board. He and Susan also enjoyed delivering meals for the Area Agency for Aging. He loved to travel and follow the Iowa Hawkeyes and SCC Blackhawks.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Christine Randolph of Burlington; son, John Elder Randolph of Spring, TX; daughter, Amelia Randolph of Sonoma, CA; two step-sons, Bradlee Ellerbroek of Andover, MN, Tobe Ellerbroek of West Des Moines; two step-daughters, Jennifer Loftus of New London, Jean Marie Goodwin of West Des Moines; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Caroline Page and Catherine Stromberg.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

As per John's wishes, there will be no services at this time. A gathering of friends and family will be held at a later date. 

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Burlington Public Library, Special Needs Foundation of Des Moines County, and the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.
