Joseph Sherman Phillips, 79, of Danville, turned his oxygen tank in for his wings at 2:05 PM Saturday, May 28, 2022, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born May 17, 1943, in St. Marys IL, he was the son of Sherman and Eva Cox Phillips. On July 13, 1963, he married Wanda Lyons in Aberdeen, Maryland.
Joe worked for K&R Super Value for several years while he was in school. After graduating from Burlington High School in 1961, Joe joined the U.S. Army and served in Handu, Germany. After he returned home, he worked for Champion Sparkplug for over 40 years before retiring.
Joe was a member of the First Christian Church, and UAW Local 1237. His enjoyment was spending time on his farm with the horses and coffee time with his friend, Leon. Joe's greatest joy was spending time with his grandson and picnics with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda; son, Steven (Danelle) Phillips of Summerville, SC; daughter, Danica (Jason) Wharton of Burlington; grandson, Ronan Wharton; two sisters, Retha (Bill) Botler of Morning Sun, and Jane Sommerfield of New London; brother-in-law, Robert Lyons of Burlington, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert (Bonnie) Phillips and David (Carol) Phillips; sister, Patricia Shannon; brother-in-law, Robert Sommerfield, two nieces, Sandra Hartman and Linda Sue Selters.
Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM with the family to receive friends Saturday, June 4, 2022, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.
The funeral service for Mr. Phillips will be 10:00 AM Saturday, June 4, 2022, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with officiating. Burial will be in Long Creek Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.
