Margaret Loretta Ewing

Margaret Loretta Ewing, 98, of Burlington, died at 5:55 PM Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born October 13, 1922, in Galesburg, IL, she was the daughter of James L. and Elizabeth L. McGivern Burke. On April 10, 1948, she married James R. Ewing in Galesburg, IL.

Margaret worked as a deputy clerk for the district court for 23 years.

She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, SS John and Paul Catholic Church. She was also a member of Genealogical Societies and Moose. Loretta began collecting stamps at the age of 12. This lead to a lifetime hobby. She enjoyed knitting, attending auctions, house boating on the Mississippi, traveling with her husband in their RV and to various countries with her sisters. She volunteered every year with Burlington Notre Dame God's Portion Day and garage sale. She was an avid, lifelong fan of the University of Notre Dame fighting Irish. She enjoyed decorating for every holiday and put up over a dozen decorated trees for Christmas.

Survivors include three daughters, Janet (Tom) Fontaine of Arlington, TX, Nora Robinson and Patty (John) Kniffen both of Burlington, IA; 10 grandchildren, Richard Bradley Leach, Amy Lynn (Brad) Ward, James Ryan (Lindsay) Leach, Wendy Nicole (Clint) Doherty, Gregory Lee (Emilie) VanNice, Elizabeth Ann Kniffen, Sara Christine Kniffen, Tyler John Kniffen, Kevin Michael (Jessica) Kniffen, and Kyle Mathew (Allisha) Kniffen; 15 great-grandchildren; niece and caregiver, Susan Mower; and several other nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Fred Burke, and four sisters, Betty Mower, Eleanor Miller, Eileen Fey and Helen Weaver.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Wednesday, June 23, 2021, at Prugh's Chapel, downtown.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Ewing will be 10:00 AM Thursday, June 24, 2021, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant.  Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir.  Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.  

A memorial has been established for Burlington Area Catholic Schools.
