Richard Japsen Obituary

Richard "Dick" Jerome Japsen, 89, of Burlington, passed away Sunday, October 24, 2021 at the Klein Center, West Burlington, Iowa.

Born October 28, 1931, in Burlington, he was the son of Hans Conrad and Esther Catherine Wales Japsen. He married Rosemary Aid in November 1958, they later divorced. On April 1, 1991, he married Kathryn "Kitsie" Steer in Burlington. 

Dick served in the Naval Reserves. 

Dick worked for Farm Service, Beckman TV and Appliance, Atlas Truck and Radiator, and for 18 years as a service company manager for Atlas Trucking. 

He graduated Sperry High School in 1949. 

He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a long time Southeastern Community College Blackhawks basketball booster. Dick was a 40 year golfer and a long time bowler. Two of his proudest memories were his hole-in-one and rolling a 300 bowling game. 

On October 9, 1986 he met Bill W. They became lifelong friends from that day forward.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn; two daughters, Lorna (Steve) Holland of Des Moines, and Molly (Brad) Miller of North Liberty; three step-sons, James Steer, Joseph (Kelly) Steer, and Todd (Bonnie) Steer; one step-daughter, Ann (Scott) Loehrke; five grandchildren, Jacob (Kerra) Holland, Cera Holland, and Jarod, Kaitlin, and Jackson Clevenger; 8 step-grandchildren; one brother, Brian (Constance) Japsen of Burlington; one sister-in-law, Sister Maureen O'Connor; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Alan Japsen; and one sister-in-law, Marilyn Japsen.

As per Dick's request cremation has been accorded.

Visitation will be 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 28, 2021at Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.

The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Japsen will be 11:00 AM Thursday, October 28, 2021 at Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. James Flattery as the Celebrant. Due to concerns regarding COVID-19, the family requests all attendees wear masks. Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Divine Mercy Parish.
