Stephen Matthew Crane, 55, of Burlington, died at 8:30 AM Monday, July 4, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family. It was an honor and a blessing for all of us to be with and to care for Steve in his final days.
Born July 7, 1966, he was the son of Frederick Crane and Gloria Ann Beardsworth.
Steve was a heavy equipment operator for Merschman Fertilizer. He loaded barges on the Mississippi and often enjoyed celebrating the end of the week with his co-workers.
An outdoorsman, Steve enjoyed fishing, shooting, hunting mushrooms and gardening. He loved attending concerts and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and NASCAR fan. He also enjoyed relaxing with his good friends at Hallers. Family and friends, who knew him best, loved him for his caring heart and generous spirit. He was always the first to step up and help a friend or neighbor with anything they might need.
Survivors include his mother, Gloria DeVilbiss (Dan) of Burlington; his loving girlfriend and companion, Margaret Neff of Burlington; two sisters, Portia (Dave) Bisgard of Libertyville, IA and Melinda (Dennis) Hendrickson of Urbandale; two brothers, Conrad Crane (Derick) of La Salette Ontario, CA and Mike (Julie) Crane of Winterset; much loved nieces and nephews; and his beloved, faithful little dog, Tazmo, who never left his side.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, July 7, 2022 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.
The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Steve will be 10:30 AM Friday, July 8, 2022, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. Paul's Catholic Church with Rev. James Flattery as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the Prugh~Thielen Community Room following the burial.
A memorial has been established for the Wounded Warrior Project.
