William Joseph Harrington, 86, of Naples, FL, formerly of Burlington, IA, passed away on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers, FL.
William (Bill) was born in Waverly, Iowa on December 11, 1935. He was the first child of Joseph and Agnes (Hagarty) Harrington.
He grew up on a farm near Plainfield, IA. Bill graduated from Waverly High School in 1954. After high school, he went on to study at Iowa State University before serving in Korea for the U.S. Army.
Bill was a dynamic, enterprising hard worker with a vibrant personality. He was involved in sales and management most of his life. Some of his pursuits included owning a supper club and getting his pilot’s license. He retired in 1998 as Vice President of King’s Material, Quad Cities.
Bill enjoyed motorhoming and boating and was an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He received a National Award of Merit for saving 4 lives.
Bill married LouAnn Larsen in Cedar Falls, Iowa and they had four children. They later divorced. In 1988, he married Carol Laue Roberts.
Bill was an active, faith-filled member of St. Finbarr Catholic Church in Naples, FL; the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree; and the VFW. He also served as a volunteer for Catholic Charities.
Bill is survived by his wife, Carol; his children, Karlyn Harrington (Mark) of Naples, FL, Paul Harrington, Port Byron, IL and Susan Soupiset (Shannon) of Iowa City, IA. Carol’s children: Susan Sovers (John) of Iowa City, IA; Sarah Loots (Mark) of Burlington, IA; David (Bill) Roberts (Brooke) of Burlington, IA; and Edward Roberts (Cathy) of Burlington, IA; Brothers: Leonard (Janet) of Atkinson, IL; Terrance (Cindy) of Adel, IA; Edward (Kay) of Adel, IA; Phillip (Janice) of Adel, IA; sisters: JoAnn Carey (Dick) of Shellrock, IA; and Sharon Puls-Curttright of Menasha, WI; sisters-in-law, Beverley Harrington of Haywood, MN and Jean Laue Stewart; brother-in-law, Ronald Laue (Jan) of Burlington, IA;16 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Agnes and Joseph; his son, Craig; his brothers, Stanley and Wayne; his brother-in-law, Budd Curttright; and his sister-in-law, Jean Laue Stewart.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully asks for memorial donations to the family or St. Mary’s Catholic Church, West Burlington, IA.
The family will receive friends and family from 10:00-11:00 on June 27th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, West Burlington, IA. A funeral mass will follow with burial at North Walker Cemetery, Burlington, IA.
